UK beach closures come into force

Dog walkers can’t walk animals on many British beaches after banning orders came into effect on 1 May.

The rules are part of annual restrictions that were introduced by councils across the UK to allow families to enjoy parts of beaches during the summer months, without being bothered by dogs. In most areas the banning orders run until 30 September.

Those who disobey the rules could get up to a £1,000 fine in some regions, some beaches will have signs up, but dog walkers are advised to check the status of their beach before they travel.

The Dorset beaches affected are: Alum Chine, Durley Chine, West Cliff, East Cliff, West of Fisherman’s Walk beach, East of Southbourne to just before Hengistbury Head, Avon Beach, Friars Cliff Beach, Highcliffe Beach between groynes H8 and H8, Shore Road, Flaghead Chine, Canford Cliffs, Branksome Chine, West of Fisherman’s Walk beach, East of Southbourne to just before Hengistbury Head, Seatown Beach, West Bay Beach, Charmouth Beach, Lyme Regis front beach, and Swanage Beach.

The Devon beaches included in the closures includeExmouth beach, Sidmouth Town Beach (from the main town beach), Sidmouth Jacobs Ladder beach (from the immediate area of Jacob’s ladder), Seaton Beach (from the middle section), Beer Beach (from the western half), Budleigh Salterton Beach (from the centre portion of the beach), Breakwater Beach, Broadsands Beach, Corbyn Head, Goodrington Sands – South Sands (between the cliffs at the southern end and the signs at Middlestone to the North), Hollicombe Beach, Meadfoot Beach- South western part (between notices displayed on the foreshore), Oddicombe Beach, Paignton Sands, Preston Sands, Shoalstone Pool, and Torre Abbey Sands.

In Teesside and Yorkshire the beaches covered by bans are: Redcar beach (from the western corner of the Regent Cinema, down to the Esplanade and Graffenberg Street), Saltburn (between Hazelgrove and Saltburn Pier), Scarborough North and South Bay, Whitby West Cliff, Filey, Sandsend, Hartlepool Headland (Block Sands and Fish Sands), Seaton Carew (from the Norton Hotel to the coach park), Roker beach (between Pier Cottages and the junction of Roker Park, Seaburn beach (between Queen’s Parade and Morrisons), Sandhaven (between Trow Rocks and the Ocean Beach car park) King Edward’s Bay in Tynemouth, Tynemouth Longsands South, Whitley Bay South, Cullercoats Bay (between North and South Pier, Newbiggin (from the promenade to Beach Terrace and marine centre), Blyth beach (from Beach Gardens to Blyth Links), Bridlington north beach (between the northern end of North Marine Promenade and the north-eastern face of the North Pier), Bridlington south beach (between the southern face of the South Pier and the eastern face of Princess Mary Promenade Sea Wall), Hornsea (between the concrete ramp at Headland View and the steps south of Sands Lane), and Withernsea (between the access ramp opposite Seaside Road and the beach access steps 100 metres south of Pier Towers).

In Wales bans cover the following beaches: Beaumaris, Benllech, Cemaes Bay, Llanddwyn, Newborough, Llanddona, Trearddur Bay, Porth Dafarch, Rest Bay (Rest Point until Golf Bay), Town Beach, Coney Beach, Trecco Bay, Rhos on Sea Beach (between Rhos Point and the eastern end of the Cayley Promenade), Colwyn Bay Beach (between the Victoria Pier and the entrance to Eirias Park), Pensarn Beach (between the embedded wooden posts by the café and the embedded concrete posts at the western end of the promenade), Kinmel Bay Beach (between Dinas Avenue, Kinmel Bay and Sandbank Road Towyn), Llandudno North Shore Beach (from Llandudno Pier to Clarence Road), Llandudno West Shore Beach (between the two stone groynes), Penmaenmawr Beach (from the east side of the café to the sailing club slipway), Llanfairfechan Beach (between the 2 slipways extending down from the promenade to the Low Water Mark), Mwnt, Penbryn, Aberavon, Tenby north beach, Whitesands, St David’s, Swansea Bay (from the River Tawe to the slip opposite Victoria Park and from the beach access at Sketty Lane to the northern edge of the slip at the West Cross Inn), Bracelet Bay, Limeslade Bay, Rotherslade Bay, Langland Bay, Caswell Bay, Port Eynon beach (from the eastern edge of the steps to Port Eynon beach to the eastern edge of Horton beach access), Whitmore Bay (Barry Island), Cold Knap, Penarth seafront, and Dunraven Bay (Southerndown), and Cwm Colhuw (Llantwit).

The Cornwall beaches affected include Cadgwith Cove, Castle Beach, Cawsand Beach, Chapel Porth Beach, Church Cove, Harveys Towans (Godrevy Point, Hayle), Housel Bay, Kennack Sands Beach, Kynance Cove, Maenporth Beach, Mousehole Beach to Skilly Beach, Wherry Town to Battery Rocks, Longrock level crossing to Marazion, Perranuthnoe, Poldu Beach, Polurrian Cove Beach, Porthcurno, Porthgwarra Beach, Porthgwidden Beach, Porthleven West, Porthpean Beach, Portmellon Cove, Porthreath Beach including Harbour, Praa Sands Beach, Readymoney Cove, St George’s Well, St Ives Harbour Beach, Summer’s Beach, Swanpool Beach, Tattam’s Beach, and Tunnel Beach.

Areas with Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, which are required to have longer restrictions, include: Carbis Bay Beach, Crackington Haven, Crooklets Beach, Gyllyngvase Beach, Polzeath Beach, Porth Beach, Porthmeor Beach, Porthminister Beach, Porthtowan Beach, Sennen Beach, Trevone Beach, and Widemouth Beach.
