Sussex residents back plans for new restrictions on dog walkers
West Sussex residents have back proposals for new restrictions on dog walkers in parts of Shoreham, Lancing, and surrounding areas.
Adur District Council has revealed that anybody walking their dog on the Adur Ferry Bridge footpath or on the riverbank footpath, between Brighton Road and Riverside in Shoreham Beach, could soon have to keep their animal on a lead.
The council has also unveiled it will vote on proposals to ban dogs entirely from the play area and skate park at Lancing Beach Green and from an area of The Meads recreational ground.
The new proposals would replace and expand upon an existing Public Space Protection Order, which limits where dogs can be walked or need to be on a lead, as well as ban dog fouling, which is set to expire on 18 December. People found to breach the order will be given a fixed penalty notice of £100.
Emma Evans, Adur’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Leisure Councillor, said: “Our open spaces are an asset for the whole community and we have a responsibility to protect them for everyone. These changes are about putting some fair restrictions in place to allow as many people as possible to enjoy the beauty of the district in safety.”
The proposals will be recommended for approval on 20 October.
