Dog owners struggle with caring for older pets

A quarter of dog owners of senior dogs admit to finding caring for an older pet more challenging than they expected, new research reveals.

A poll of 2,000 dog owners by Royal Canin shows that those with a dog over the age of seven have made adjustments to their homes to meet their changing needs, including installing ramps.

One in five are constantly worried about their dog’s quality of life as they age. As a result, many have introduced special diets, medication, and reduced walks to make life easier for their pet.

Georgie Woods-Lee, a pet nutrition specialist from the University of Liverpool who is working with the brand, said: “Whether it’s adjusting walk routines, maintaining a healthy weight, focusing on mental stimulation, or using targeted supplements for joints, digestion or skin and coat, there’s so much we can do to help them live happy, healthy lives.”
