Dog owner gives HRT warning
A dog owner is warning about the dangers of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) creams to dogs, which can cause fatal bone marrow toxicity.
Kirsty Mattinson’s 12-week-old Dachshund was rushed to a vet showing signs of ovulating after the puppy licked Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) cream off her owner’s arms.
Tests revealed Lilly had absorbed the oestrogen, which had caused her to develop symptoms of being in season. Mattison has removed the cream from Lily’s reach and she has made a full recovery.
Mattison said: “I’ve learnt an important lesson and my advice to dog owners is to keep them away from hormone products that you may use on your body.”
Lara Baptista, Clinician in small animal internal medicine at Paragon Veterinary Referrals, said: “We would echo Kirsty’s advice in that dog owners using hormonal cream containing oestrogen shouldn’t let their pets come into contact with the area where they are applying the cream as the consequences can be very upsetting.”
