Devon dog walkers facing fines if they breach long lead rule

Dog walkers in Teignbridge, Devon, could face a hefty fine of up to £1,000 if caught using a lead longer than 2m long near cycle paths, public footways, and highways, following a rule change set to come into effect on 1 April.

Teignbridge Council announced the new rule as part of its Dog Public Space Protection Order aimed at reducing what it describes as “irresponsible dog ownership”.

Dogs are still allowed to be walked on longer leads in parks and beaches, however.

Meanwhile, the rules dictate that professional dog walkers can walk up to six dogs, while the usual rules of keeping dogs on a lead in certain areas and not walking them on some beaches from 1 April to 30 September still apply.

Ignoring the rules can result in a £100 fine on the spot or £1,000 if the case goes to court.
