Over 90% of puppy owners open to receiving ‘expert advice’
More than half (56%) of dog owners were surprised at the difficulty of caring for a puppy, with 71% likening it to having a newborn baby, new research reveals.
The research by insurance company ManyPets shows the damage that the pet did to their home (43%) and its behaviour (42%), were both cited as major reasons for ‘puppy blues’.
The research also reveals that 91% of owners would prefer expert advice to help them cope with tough times.
In addition, the research reveals that 75% of people with puppy blues felt embarrassed by their feelings towards their dog. Nearly half (46%) of dog owners have thought about giving up on their pet or rehousing it many times.
Many people feel that having a puppy creates tension in the household because of the extra chores, 52% of respondents said that getting a puppy can cause arguments, while 52% are more concerned with their puppy than they are about washing up.
The research shows that 96% of respondents with puppy blues reported that these feelings were either completely gone or diminished over time. For 28%, the most negative emotions usually disappeared in less than a week.
Oke Eleazu, UK Chief Executive of ManyPets, said: “This is why we’re excited to have appointed veterinarian, Dr Scott Miller, as our first ever Doggy Doula, to provide the emotional and informational support needed to help new dog owners adapt to life with their puppy.”
