Dog controls come into force at popular Teesside walking spots
Redcar and Cleveland Council has introduced new dog controls that cover many of the parks and gardens across the borough.
The new public spaces protection order (PSPO) covers Redcar’s Locke, Borough and Zetland parks and the Valley Gardens in both Saltburn and Marske.
In some cases, entire parks have become ‘no dogs off leads’ zones, while other popular destinations have seen small areas restricted.
The ‘dog on lead’ rules applies to Saltburn’s Marine Paride Lower Path Gardens and Coronation Park in Loftus.
Meanwhile, enforcement at Saltburn Valley Gardens only applies to an area around the Italian Gardens, tea rooms, and woodland centre area.
The PSPO enables the council to take enforcement action by issuing on-the-spot £100 fines to dog walkers.
Punishable offences for dog walkers also include:
- Failure to clean up after their dog.
- Permitting their dogs to enter areas of Redcar and Saltburn beaches between 1 May and 30 September.
- Permitting their dogs to enter any of the council’s nine cemeteries.
- Permitting their dogs to enter any of the 64 fenced-off children’s play areas across the borough.
- Failing to have the means to pick-up after a dog.
- Failing to put and keep their dog on a lead when asked to by an enforcement officer.
- Failing to keep a dog on a lead when in any of the specified formal parks and gardens.
Redcar and Cleveland Council introduced the changes following a consultation earlier this year.
