Therapeutic dog food market set to reach US$8.9m by 2028
The rise of dog therapeutic diets is expected to continue its upward trajectory, as a new market forecast expects the sector to grow by 5.6% in the period between 2021 and 2028.
The term therapeutic dog food refers to products specifically formulated to aid the wellness of dogs; pet food manufacturers have been increasingly changing their product variants towards this end, thus fuelling the trend.
Based on product type, the global therapeutic dog food market is segmented into dry food, wet/canned food, snacks/treats, and others; in 2020, the dry food segment held the largest share of the market.
What’s more, the snacks/treats segment is expected to register the highest CAGR in the market during 2021–2028, as dry foods are perceived beneficial to dogs’ dental health.
Meanwhie, the digestive care segment is expected to hold a significant market share in the therapeutic dog food market in the future, the report noted.
As a recent example of the expected growth, WellPet brand Wellness Natural Pet Food launched a new line of functional pet food formulas targeting digestive health of dogs and cats in January 2021.
The recent boom in dog adoptions is thought to have fuelled demand for the sector, with the Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report 2019 by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) reporting that 26% of adults in the UK own a dog, meaning an estimated population of 9.9 million pet dogs.
