Fifth of dog owners have considered shoplifting over cost of food
One in five dog owners have considered shop-lifting pet food, new research reveals.
The study, of 2,000 dog owners by Burns Pet Nutrition, finds two-thirds of dog owners are prepared to cut back on their pets’ portion sizes. A third of owners have put it into practice – with 16% cutting back portions and 17% switching to a cheaper pet food.
Nearly one in 10 owners said they had put their dog first and made personal sacrifices to ensure their pet had food in its bowl every day, the poll reveals.
In addition, nearly one in five dog owners said they have contemplated giving up their pets to save cash. More than a third of owners said they would consider going to or are already using a food bank to get pet food for their dog.
The research shows that two-fifths of owners admitted they were ‘struggling’ to afford keeping their dog when vets bills, accessories and food are all taken into account.
Emily Boardman, Pet Nutritionist and Veterinary Advisor at Burns Pet Nutrition, said: “It’s truly heart-breaking the lengths some dog owners are prepared to go to ensure their pet gets the food it needs. At Burns, we want to help where we can, whether that’s through donations or offering advice on how to manage pet care during difficult times.
“No pet should go without the nutrition they need, and we hope our partnership with Blue Cross will make a real difference to those in need.”
